Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for automatic winding operations
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for operating automated winders and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Receive, interpret and clarify shift changeover details and take over control of winder
   • Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment
   • Perform equipment and work area pre-operational checks
   • Check written records for outstanding maintenance/inspections, record defects and take action
   • Identify, address and report defects and potential hazards and risks
   • Carry out start-up procedures, including checking that area is clear for operations
   • Identify, address and report relevant environmental issues
   • Adhere to emergency procedures
   • Apply dust suppression and extraction methods
2. Haul personnel
   • Communicate with relevant personnel
   • Confirm cage is ready for operation
   • Initiate the system, follow start-up procedures and operate personnel cage, complying with directions from person in charge of cage
   • Monitor and manage cage performance using appropriate indicators
   • Carry out shutdown procedures
3. Haul equipment materials
   • Communicate with relevant personnel
   • Initiate the system, follow start-up procedures and transport equipment using auto winder
   • Monitor and manage skip performance using appropriate indicators
   • Carry out shutdown procedures
4. Carry out winder inspections
   • Isolate and prove isolation of equipment
   • Inspect winder and auxiliary equipment and report faults/defects
   • Prepare winder for routine servicing
5. Conduct end-of-shift activities
   • Complete all required written documentation
   • Pass on end-of-shift information verbally or in writing and hand over control to oncoming shift
   • Ensure control room is clean and tidy

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

demonstrates completion of the operation of automated winder that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing start-up and shutdown procedures

applying dust suppression and extraction methods

energising the system

completing personnel haulage operations using automated winder

completing equipment haulage operations using automated winder

monitor and manage cage and skip performance

isolate and inspect winder

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in operating an automated winder through:

use hand and power tools

key areas of mining acts and regulations

winder types, systems and operations

shaft configuration and construction

shaft services and installations (pipes, cables, ladders etc)

identification of defects relevant to skip operations through inspection or observation

trip and fault procedures and abnormal conditions

communication system between cage and winder

equipment processes, technical capability and limitations

geological and technical data (basic)

isolation and permit-to-work systems and procedures/manufacturer’s specifications

primary and secondary ventilation/mine ventilation system

shaft installations

in-shaft communications equipment and practices
